How to Wear a Vest: 7 Ways to Style a Reversible Vest
A good vest is the most useful layer you are not wearing yet. Here are seven easy ways to style one, and why a reversible vest gives you twice the wardrobe.
A vest is the layer that quietly does the most work. It adds shape to a plain tee, turns a shirt into an outfit and keeps your core warm without the bulk of a jacket. A reversible vest goes one step further: two finished faces in one piece, so every look below works twice.
1. Over a plain tee
The simplest outfit is often the best. Wear the vest open or buttoned over a white, black or charcoal tee and let the print do the talking. A heavyweight tee with a clean neckline, like our oversized tees, gives the vest a solid base to sit on.
2. Over a crisp shirt
Button the vest over a white or pale blue shirt for something sharper. A mandarin collar sits neatly against a shirt collar, and the look moves easily from the office to dinner.
3. Over a fine knit
When the weather turns, layer the vest over a thin merino or cotton knit. Keep the knit in one quiet colour so the print stays the focus.
4. With a dress
A sleeveless vest over a slip or shirt dress adds structure and a little warmth. Leave it open for an easy line, or button it for a more tailored shape.
5. Tonal, head to toe
Match the solid face of your vest to your trousers, then let the printed side show at the edges. Black on black or navy on navy looks considered without trying too hard.
6. Print with print
If you like a bolder look, pair a printed vest with a small, regular pattern such as a fine stripe. Keep one of the two prints much quieter than the other.
7. Turn it inside out
This is where a reversible vest earns its place. Wear the bold side by day and turn it to the quieter side for the evening. Both faces are fully finished, so there is no lining on show and no wrong side.
